We offer service to the foothills of Northern California including Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne and portions of both El Dorado and San Joaquin Counties. We often hear the terms "pest" and "beneficial" used to describe insects and other organisms, but what exactly do these terms mean? The best definition of "pest" that we have heard is "a living organism in a place where it is unwanted". "Beneficial" is normally used to define an organism that is helpful from a standpoint of humans. It also depends on which human we are talking about, because we all have our own ideas of when something is a pest! A spider in the yard is usually considered beneficial, but that same spider in the bedroom probably wouldn't be. Some of the common organisms that most people would consider to be pest are ants, spiders, cockroaches, fleas, mosquitoes, rats, mice, flies, yellow jackets and earwigs. A short list of normally beneficial organisms would be ladybugs, preying mantis', spiders, bats, lacewings, dragonflies, leather-wing beetles, numerous parasitic wasps, ant-lions, Dobson flies, solpugids, bald-faced hornets nesting away from the home, snake flies and damselflies.
